Alright, time for some story sharing! How did you find out about your kinself?
I’ll start with how I discovered my identity as a winged feline and spacekin/desertkin.
FELINEKIN:
I've always had felines in my life since early childhood. The adoption of my first pet, a brown tabby called Kitkat (who's now a grumpy, senile 17-year-old veteran) is my earliest memory from when I was two years old. I was also a big cartoon geek in my childhood - trust me I still am - and Osamu Tezuka’s a MASSIVE influence here. Kimba The White Lion played a serious role in my six-year-old roleplaying. I would always play lions with my friend, which escalated into me always playing some kind of cat as a ten-year-old. This, along with Pokemon, got me into the Furry Fandom and made me choose the caracal as a fursona.
As to my deeper kinship with winged felines, I was always some kind of winged anthropomorphic creature in my dreams, usually feline.
SPACEKIN/DESERTKIN
I’m a big fan of science fiction and space-y, robotic, futuristic multiverse themes are kind of a big deal for me. Two of my all time childhood favourites on Australian television were Jeopardy (a scottish/aussie live-action series about UFO hunters) and Parallax (another australian series about multiverses). Ecco The Dolphin is also a game I adored for the space-ness, particularly its sequel The Tides Of Time. Lately, Transformers Prime is also making me consider my spacekin feels as well, possibly even robotkin/cybertronian.
Another big factor to the spacekin feels are stories about Kepler22b, a planet in the Cygnus constellation that’s assumed to be in an earth-like “habitable zone”. While some speculations see it as an aquatic planet (which may hold kinship with the Ecco The Dolphin themes), I’ve always assumed Kepler22b, or at least an alternate timeline of it, had a desert continent on it.
The desertkin part of my identity comes mostly from my fascination with eastern mythology and history, namely Indian and Middle Eastern culture. The caracal comes not only from Africa but from parts of India, Turkey and Pakistan as well. My kinself’s name, Ayla, is a Turkish word translating to “glowing ring of light around the sun/moon during an eclipse”, or “halo”. Ironically, a favourite book of mine Clan Of The Cave Bear also has a protagonist called Ayla who has a feline totem (however, I do not feel like a fictionkin/fictive to this series). As an Australian, most of my country is desert as well and this somehow, subconsciously, reflects my self identity as well.

{TW: #drug use}While experimenting with drugs to further understand what was going on in my subconscious, especially regarding these dreams, I ended up having a “conversation” with a cat. My mind was able to automatically break the meows and purrs down into a series of chirps and clipped syllables. Whatever this “Felinese” language was, it felt familiar and easy to interpret. I looked right into Shamanism and totem animals, having more of these “conversations” with my own cats (ironically, my cat Trippy is quite overwhelming to be around when tripping) until I came to the conclusion that I was some kind of caracal. The identity of felinekin really sank in since then and has stayed ever since.
